The current building is approximately 100 years old and during that time hasn’t changed all that much. Stange & Co. acquired the Fox in 1984, and made a few sympathetic improvements, converting some of the ground floor private accommodation and tea room into the lounge bar. We also created the car park out of the pub’s private garden, which took the lottery out of parking in the rear yard, accessed from the left hand side of the pub, can you imagine trying to back out onto Barnston Road today with the volume of traffic that passes by?

As was the case for many decades with most pubs in Britain, the Fox is split into distinct rooms; the snug, the bar and the lounge.  The public house part of the building was originally just the bar and the snug, thankfully they retain all the original carpentry, stained leaded glass and open fireplaces and surrounds and original wood block and quarry tile floors, giving a unique, timeless charm. The lounge too retains many original features, and has a fascinating collection of photos, memorabilia, flying ducks, foxes, a collection of hats, whisky cartons and much more. The lounge has a little more space making it ideal for a quiet drink or bite to eat.

Beer garden

We have a quiet and secluded beer garden to the rear of the pub, offering a relaxing little sun trap during the warmer months.  Our well kept display of potted flowers and plants always makes for colourful surroundings, and our numerous bird feeders and boxes ensure you’ll always have some feathered company.

Our pub has WIFI throughout.

We have a large free car park for customers with disabled spaces located near to the entrance.

Wheelchair access

Wheelchair access is available at the rear of the pub from the car park.  By all means please call ahead and let us know that you are coming and one of our team will happily be on hand to assist with the doors should you need it.  We apologise but we do not have a disabled toilet although our toilets are on ground level.

Dog friendly

Dogs are welcome in our beer garden as well as in our ‘snug’ so please just ask a member of the team if you cannot see a water bowl and would like a drink for your dog.  Feel free to make us the last port of call on your dog walk, dogs drink for free!

Our History

The Fox & Hounds is built on a site that has been home to a pub for nearly 400 years, making it one of Wirral’s oldest pubs. There seems to have been a pub or pubs in the village since at least the sixteenth century.  Read more about the history of the Fox & Hounds HERE.
